Our sincere condolences

It is our sad duty  to inform you that Prof. Dr. med Karl Schärer, born October 20, 1929 passed away on May 3, 2019

Karl was one of the pioneers in Pediatric Nephrology. As well as being a cofounder of the German society of Pediatric Nephrology (GPN, former APN), he played an important role during the founding processes of ESPN and IPNA. In 1970, he together with Horst Bickel, organized the 3rd Meeting of the ESPN in Heidelberg. During his active career at the University Children’s Hospital in Heidelberg, he organized international meetings and symposia nearly biannually, and since he was an ESPN council  member and Congress president in 1995, many of these events were held in cooperation with the ESPN and IPNA.

Karl was devoted to pediatric nephrology and he was a firm believer in international cooperation. He managed to pass his enthusiasm on to younger people and encouraged them to remain working in academic medicine. As many as ten of his former students became leading pediatric nephrologists at University Hospitals around Germany.

After retiring from his clinical work, Karl continued to regularly attended national and international meetings for many years. He was always deeply interested in the work and careers of his younger colleagues. His last attendance took place a few weeks ago, at the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the GPN in Cologne where he met his old friends, colleagues and former students for the last time.
